Rodolfo
Protti and his Old Europa Cafe need no introduction. He was among people
who has started the contemporary industrial wave. Today Old Europa Cafe
is the leading underground label for industrial/ dark ambient/ noise/
pe. Please check out his new releases ANIMA MUNDI, SIMVLACRVM and MYIASE.
In my opinion ANIMA MUNDI is one of the best releases of this dying century.
You
will find two interviews on this page. They both was made by other people.
I had an agreement with Rodolfo about the interview for my KLEK 2 magazine,
but he decided to send me the following interviews instead. The first
one (in german) was done by Black magazine from Germany.а The second
was done a guy from the magazine called GONZO CIRCUS.а I have no contact
information about those above mentioned publications but if you can help
me I will place it on this page. Rodolfo gave me permission to print
them in my paper publication so I put 'em on this page as well. I have
no money from this web publication, the interviews were already printed
on paper so I don't rip anyone off. Hey, people from GONZO CIRCUS and
BLACK magazine, if you believe that I DO rip you off then let me know
and I throw the page away. Or we could cooperate....
Die
Grundung von OEC liegt schon sehr lange zuruck. Berichte bitte von der
Geschichte OECs!
аа
war ein CD "Brume - аа
in ende '900 !
аа
Come.to/Old.Europa.Cafe
tradizionelles echt gelebten platz !
а
Endvra, This Morn'
Omina, Hybryds, Exotoendo, Simvlacrvm, TAC, Ain Soph, Spiritual Front
Misty Circle/Ain Soph. Wie kam es dazu?
а
OEC
hat etliche Tapes herausgebracht. Mit Deutsch Nepals 'Behind the Wall
of Silence' findet dies nun ein ruhmreiches Ende. Warum? Ist die Tapeszene
tot?
а
Ja, ueber 100 tapes, Deutsch Nepal drittes tape fuer OEC wird in frueling
kommen Е
а
:
humans are looking first for "food" than for "sex"
as any other predator animal on this planet ! Once this two basic "instincts"
are satisfied humans start "thinking" and develop religion/s
(magic) and Politics (phylosophy) ; I made everything very simple here
but this is basicaly my way of а "Weltanschaung" and it's also
the way I was developing the two OEC branches :
Exoterica -> magic / transcendence / Unknown Е
Industrialia -> Philosophy / Logic of power / Dominion Е
а
"Macrocephalous Compost" trilogy is something i am very proud
of ! It was really a very expensive (in all senses) and hard work putting
together all those clips but I did it first of all for my personal interest
and was really enjoyng this work !
а I'm sure I'm right whan I say that this is the main "Visual documentation
on post-industrial muzak & culture of the first half of the 90es
!" .
а
Im 1999 habe ich 2 Lp's, 3x10", 1x7"produziert, ist dass wenig
?
Welches Medium an Tontragern bevorzugst du und warum?
а
Ich liebe vinyl !
а Aber cd ist einfacher und schneller produzierbar Е
Warum gibt es keine OEC Compilations? Hast du kein Interesse, OEC auf
diese Art zu prasentieren?
а
bestimmtes thema in frage kommt .
Was macht eigentlich dein eigenes Projekt Seelenlarm? Steht hier vielleicht
mal eine Veroffentlichung an?
а
Е
Was planst du fur die Zukunft fur Veroffentlichungen auf OEC?
а

What where the events that made you decide to start your own label and
mail order company. Please describe the evolution from the very first
OEC release till today. Why did you choose the name OLD EUROPA CAFE ?
from were I'm standing it seems that the interest in your label is really
booming the last 2-3 years, do you see any special reason for this ?
Well,
everything was starting in early 80es once I leave a group I was involved
with because of other interests Е
The very first OEC releases was a series of tapes of groups from Czechoslovakia
which was banned in their country during the communist era and before
the fall of the Iron Curtain, this groups was delivering very strange
and "uncontaminated" sounds but wasn't able to communicate
with other countries and even internally there was big problems to bring
this sounds out from the underground .
The Czechoslovakian "times" and first OEC phase was ending
with the release of the first OEC vinyl, which was a compilation featuring
all those groups, the sounds was quiet different from what OEC was purposing
in the future .
The first pure "industrial" and official second OEC production
production phase was a "De Fabriek" tape with special booklet
which was issuedа as a limited edition of 50 copies.
The first non-tape release of this second OEC phase was a CD by "Brume
- Batteries Hens Sabotage" limited to 498 copies, by the way Brume
was and remains in my oppinion one of the biggerst sound manipulators
of the end of '900 !
In 1997 i decided to run the label on a more professional way and was
stopping the production of tape for concentrate only in the CD and Vinyl
production, during the previous 10 years OEC was producing 101 tapes
Е
Before the end of 1999 OEC was releasing :а 24 CD's, 8 LP's, 3 10"records,
2 7" records.
The
mail-order was born once I started trading OEC releases against releases
of other labels, many years ago.
In the years the list was growing and growing and today I am running
a real large mail-order which is also on line in the World Wide Web (at
http://www.Come.to/Old.Europa.Cafe)
Yes,
the label is becoming more known. The reason why must be found in the
more professional way I was running everything, delivering good &
interesting productions on good standards !
I was producing in those last years many debut albums (Exotoendo, This
Morn' Omina, Spiritual Front Е) which was all appreciated, the reason
is in the high quality standards of the sounds delivered by the groups
and the high productionа standards . People now know that if they buy
an OEC release, even if the group/project is not well known, the quality
is good .
I'm anyway far away from saying that OEC is an established label now,
it's still a small one-man label !
And I still choose all new productions on the same wayа "they must
be of my interest, I must like what I hear and see".
Are/were you involved in musical projects yourself ?
Yes,
I was involved with a band called "XX Centvry Zorro" ! We was
releasing maybe the first LP of new Italian pre-industrial music called
"La Volpe du XX Siecle"; the sounds was a bit crazy, а using
trumpets, many voices and sounds which can remind to a certain minimal-pop,
all in all a very unique sound. The album was recorded with a special
system which we called "MON-STER System", in fact we was recording
different tracks on each disc channel so at last you had 3 listening
possibilities : left channel one song, right channel an other song, in
the middle the confusion of both songs played together (I'm thinking
to re-issue this album soon or later Е).
Lately I was delivering a couple of tracks for compilationsа under the
name "Seelenlaerm" one is to find on the AVA compilation "Conception
/ the dark evolution of electronics" .
I will probably record some more sounds in the future but first of all
comes the label !
Is there an "industrial scene" (shops, conceerts, magazines
Е) in Italy or most of your releases meant for export ? Are there other
Italian bands/labels you'd like to tell us about ? It seems that a lot
of interesting music/labels comes from Italy Lately. Is Italy a confortable
country toi operate from (f.i. Did you have trouble with the authorities
because of cover images etc Е)
There
is a small "scene", there are few specialized shops, few live
events and some magazines but the large part of OEC productions are going
to Germany and north Europe !
Yes, many good project & labels are operating in Italy Е here you
have a list ->
Industrial-Noise projects :
Bad Sector / Atrax Morgue / Sshe Retina Stimulants / I Burn / Sigillum
S / CazzoDio / Whertam / Amon - Never Known / Murder Corporation / K.D.N.R.
/ Diktat / Today I'm Dead / Discordance / Iugual-Thor / Lvnvs Е
Dark-Esoteric projects :
Ain Soph / Camerata Medilanense / Ataraxia / Nobody / Spiritual Front
/ Kirlian Camera / Runes Order / T.A.C. / Futhark / Andromeda Complex
/ Northgate / Ordo Equitum Solis / Alio Die / Oophoi Е
Labels :
Amplexus / Slaughter Prod. / Energeia / Palace of Worms / Eibon / Hic
Sunt Leones / Oktagon / E.N.D.E. Е
There are many other names which i didn't mention for not beeing so long
.
I didn't had any production difficulty because of cover-immages until
today, I saw there is much more attention on this matter in Germany Е
I recently did an article on the evolution/decline of the Belgian cassette
scene. What's your opinion about the recent "trends" like the
rise of highly limited stuff in general, very very limited cd-r's in
particular, special packages, the rebirth of vinyl and so on. Some critics
say the industrial scene has become "arty farty" with more
attention paid to marketing strategies and lay-outs than to the actual
music. Do you see any future for the good old audio tape ?
Well,
I'm not against cassettes, I saw many very good produced tapes which
had a very high quality in both : sound and cover art-work when this
kind of "scene" was at the beginning, I think about the first
Staalplaat, Touch, Cold Meat Industry tapes but also many small labels
like the Italian Sloughter was delivering high interesting stuff on this
format and can still make very good productions using tapes !
But I saw through the years also tons of rubbish ! You know everybody
who was making a "prrr or a frrr" was thinking to be the greatest
noise-maker on the old planet and was releasing his own tape Е I got
many of those so called "demos" in my mail-box and, belive
me, the large part was completely not interesting at all !
Now the same is happening with the CD-R format !
I love limited editions, if a painter is numbering a limited print why
can't a noise-maker do the same ?
The only thing the makes the difference is the good quality in all his
components !
I'm sure you understand what i mean Е
If I have to devide the themes of your releases in two parts I'd say
you have an interest in violent experimantal nosemusic and more etheral
ritual stuff. Can you elaborate on each of those two topics (f.i. do
you practice magic(k) yourself; do you have any "religious"
or philosophical inspiration/beliefs (you seem to enjoy using and abusing
Roman Catholic titles and phrases) ? What's your attitude towards the
sexual violence ereached by some of the "power electronics"
bands and the philosophy of De Sade "everything that gives me pleasure
is good thing no matter if it's at the expense of others"
Yes,
you are right, i use to devide the OEC releases into two categories :
1) Industrialia : power-industrial, not really noise & not this more
rythmic sounds, simply industrial & post-industrial !
Even the split album I was producing with Merzbow & the Haters is
far from noise but very close to traditional Industrial muzak ; the new
industrial titles i'm going to produce are also in this vein of sculptured
sounds or more close to power-electronics .
2) Exoterica : dark-ritual sounds with a touch of ambient and ethnic
music !
here the components are abscure or trance sounds sometimes devoted to
real esoteric themes but never falling into absolute dark (gothic) and
the so called "death" styles .
Religion and Magic, Philosophy and Politics is/are part of the daily
life of everybody ! Maybe someа people don't understand this but there
is no escape : humans are looking first for "food" than for
"sex" as any other predator animal on this planet ! Once this
two basic "instincts" are satisfied humans start "thinking"
and develop religion/s (magic) and Politics (phylosophy) ; I made everything
very simple here but this is basicaly my way ofа "Weltanschaung"
and it's also the way I was developing the two OEC branches :
Exoterica -> magic / transcendence / Unknown
Industrialia -> Philosophy / Logic of power / Dominion
It's right i enjoy using paraphrasis from the Catholic-Romanic religion
! I use to be a minor clerk as young guy and grow up with a strength
catholic education in a small mountain village Е In some way I'm still
Catholic, I mean that there are some principles which i took from this
education that are still very actual and valid for myself ! But I use
the "priests - languge" just for my own pleasure ! "Who
knows, knows ! Don't use God's name in vain !".
In my opinion Marquise De Sade was just and only describing "The
logic of Power = Dominion", I see him as a great Phylosoph and Politician
!
A serial killer looks usualy very "normal" but usualy has "sexual
problems" Е
The "Catholic-Roman" church is 2000 years old , the "Roman
empire" was dominating just a couple of 100 years and the "Third
Reich" just a couple of 10 years Е
Who has the power ? Who is dominating ? Why ? I don't have the answers
and I'm not searching for Е I just try to understand human beeing but
the older I become (and I'm very old Е) the more it's difficult to me
"understanding" .
What made you decide to assemble/release the video trilogy "Macrocephalous
Compost", video compilations of industrial music are a rarity. I
guess they're too expensive to produce and trigger too little interest/sales
Е do you agree ?
The
"Macrocephalous Compost" trilogy is something i am very proud
of ! It was really a very expensive and hard work putting together all
those clips but I did first of all for my personal interest and I telkl
you one thing : I really was enjoyng this work ! It's right comilations
don't sell that much and video-compilations even the less Е
Anyway I'm sure I'm right whan I say that this is the main "Visual
documentation on post-industrial muzak & culture of the first half
of the 90es !"

P.S.
I'm
still interested in the story of the choice of the name Old Europa Cafe
(or is this a well kept secret?)
1st
of all "cafe" in this case is without accent, must be written
simply "cafe"! well, the name comes from some "Futurism
and Dada" influences as well as the OEC face-logo design which i
hae re-designed in those days .
How
the hell did you end up releasing stuff by banned Czech avant-garde artists
in the early eghties.. What events lead to the first contacts?
I
got from a friend a tape by a Prague band called "MCH Band",
which was really surprising me, it was a kind of "No NY" sound
with a very scraping voice and really psychotic urban sounds . I decided
to keep contact with this band and through "Mikolas" (the mind
behind MCH) i got a series of tapes from his band & other projects
ranging from strage acoustic violence to real industrial and some unusual
wave sounds . I got all tapes not directly from Mikolas through normal
mail becouse his post was regularly and sistematicaly controlled from
the local secret services (really!) but trough ocasionally people (usually
turists, once some prople of german television who was reporting about
young life in Prague Е) known from Mikolas in Prague which was sending
the parcels to me once they where over the border Е. All the stuff i
got was "legal" for western standards but strict forbiden from
the Czechoslovakian comunist authorities . The sound was "fresh
and different", incredible what those guys was able to deliver without
modern electronic instrumentsand without contacts with western culture
. So i decided to produce this LP with the intention of send the large
part of the issued copies back to Czechoslovakia which was what happened
(i don't tell you how), an underground production for a real underground
audience ! At last i had fun in all this story and after the fall of
the Iron curtain i was visiting for the 1st time my friend Mikolas in
Prague, this was during the days of the division of Czechoslovakia into
2 states Е
what
kind of group did you leave in the early eighties (rock, punk, avantgarde,
pop???)
The
group was XX CENTURY ZORRO, a project involving 10 members, it wasn't
just music, we was alsoworking on many other projects like : a label
/ networking / immage and styling / strategic organisation Е just for
give you an idea we was organising the "Great Complotto International"
which was for sure one of the very 1st festivals of new indipendent muzak
and we had among others Die Form as guest who did a great s/m performance
in an old Napoleonic small bunker .
in
what ways are you 'still a catholic', can you give some examples?
There
are some habits and principles with which i was growing and that are
part of my life and way of live, i can't give you an example as this
isn't something specific but a complex and complete style of life which
hasn't to be confused with beeing a catholic !
