No
Doves on The Esthetics of Cruelty is my first experience of Treriksroset's
music. As I already mentioned before after listening to this DCD I decided
to do an article about Swedish pe/ noise scene fro my Belarussian M magazine.
I've sent a bunch of the same questions to some of the bands from Esthetics...
and I wanted to compare the answers in the article. Luckily or unfortunately,
I received very interesting (at least for me) answers so now I'm thinking
about printing the interviews as is. With no comments.Well, I hope you
find this interview somehow interesting or helpful. Enjoy!
First,
please tell a bit about yourself. Introduce yourself.
My
name is Tommy Carlsson, I am one half of Treriksroset. We have no political
agenda, but will be happy to let anyone know what we think. Fuck the
law of the strong - viva solidarity. I also run the label Segerhuva together
with a friend. If you want more information on the label, please write
to me, or visit our web site:
http://www.flashback.net/~siam/segerhuva.html
Please
tell me about your band. When was it formed, why, your releases, etc.
Treriksroset
was formed by myself, Tommy Carlsson, and Peter Thorneby (of P2 fame)
in Umea 1996. We started Treriksroset with the clear intention of producing
noise and nothing but noise. So far, all music has been produced by me,
but I cannot enough stress the fact that Peter's input is just as valuable,
although it may not be as obvious to the listener. There are no releases
as such yet. We are currently working on a full length tape to be released
early 2000. We like the tape format, and would like to put some serious
work into doing as good a tape as possible.
Why
did you decided to play power electronics? What has influenced this decision?
By choice
or by design. I don't know. Is it power electronics? To me, that sounds
fine. I remember the good old days when most of the harsher "post-industrial"
sounds were referred to as PE. Merzbow, Whitehouse, MB and Club Moral
don't have a whole lot in common really, but they were all lumped together
in the PE dept. Now, most people would hesitate to call anything PE unless
it's a wall of mic feedback plus flangerized vocals screaming about killing
prostitutes... While I personally may find that particular brand of music
appealing at times (when well done a la Slogun, Taint, SJ) it is hardly
what I want to work with musically. To me, the SOUND has always been
the most important thing. You don't
need philosophies, images, political messages or attitudes - as long
as the sound is interesting in one way or the other.
What
do you think about your track on ESTHETICS OF CRUELTY? Is it good example
of your music?
Someone
said it sounds uninspired. Others have praised it. I can
honestly say that it doesn't matter to me what people think. I like it.
As to whether or not it is a good example of Treriksroset's music, I
would say yes, it's good, and it's an example of our music.
The
tracks youve enjoyed most on EOC?
Easy - BLOD.
Jesper is a fucking genius, and Blod will probably NEVER get the recognition
he deserves. There are other very good tracks on the compilation, but
also too many bands that are hung up on rhythm to ever be able to produce
good, solid noise. But that's hardly my problem. I believe it would have
made a smashing single CD comp, but as it is now it's simply too much...
Your
music isnt very aggressive and violent. Do you think that its still
called power electronics or you have better description for your music?
Whether
or not it's aggressive is not interesting to me, since I'm only in this
for the Sounds. There will probably (hopefully?) be harsher Treriksroset-tracks
in the future, but I don't think we will cling to only one type of noise.
No, it probably shouldn't be called PE - you can call it noise if you
want to.
What
do you think about noise/ power electronics scene in Sweden? Do you think
that attencion from CMI to this genre will help it somehow?
I certainly
think that "Estheticks..." will help many of the bands on
the compilation. Some of the bands have records out (or coming soon),
and that is probably in some part because of the compilation. CMI has
pleasingly enough started to dig up more and more interesting bands lately.
(For a while I dreaded the prospect of CMI only releasing Norwegian trolls
and witches/dark roleplaying game folk music shit) I sincerely hope that
the music will gain some recognition, and that Roger Karmanik will be
thanked for helping out new noisy youngsters.
Do you
plan any fulllenght releases in future?
As I said
earlier, we are working on a full length tape release. Also, we have
had offers to participate on a few compilations. I am the father of a
young girl, and that takes a lot of my spare time, so I rarely have time
to sit for hours and hours and record new music. It may take a while
to record new tracks, but whenever I have the time I'll try and get some
noise together.
What
power electronics mean to you? Is it hooby or lifestyle?
It's entertainment.
Call it what you want.
